    👱🏻‍♀️ Xanthe’s Exploits

All the news from the Rainbow Reader Cruise!

What an experience! I got to meet readers who’ve loved Dark Water and wanted to talk about the series, and I met some fellow MM romance authors in person — Casey Morales (so much fun!) and Ana Ashley, who is one of the loveliest people ever. I didn’t manage to speak to Nora Phoenix or Lucy Lennox, but I did spot them.

The organisers, Joel Leslie and Rich Najuch, were top-notch. It’s a complex event, but it ran completely smoothly, which I put down to Rich’s attention to detail — he’d thought of absolutely everything and he and Joel were such wonderful hosts.

There were four themed evening events: Rainbow, Sparkle, Fairy Tales and 1950s. I love wearing my 50s dress, so I was delighted to get that out again. For Fairy Tales I went as a fairy godmother in a sparkly silver gown, complete with tiara and wand.

The cruise set off from Fort Lauderdale, and our first stop was Key West, where Emma and I took a trolley bus tour with a lovely fellow MM fan, and visited the Ernest Hemingway house — partly because he’s an author, and partly because sixty cats live there, and we were suffering badly from FWS (Feline Withdrawal Syndrome).

Wednesday was a sea day, and also the day of the signing, so my nerves were in shreds — though luckily we were in the 8am slot, so I didn’t have long to stew. And, oh my! It was one of the best experiences of my life: two hours of full-on intensity, with the queue never letting up once. I met so many wonderful readers. And would you believe it, I sold all but one book — then, as I was packing up to leave, another author bought the last one off me. So I got the numbers exactly right! I finished the day hosting a table at dinner, where I met a lovely group of people and had brilliant conversations over our meal. Easily my favourite day of the whole trip.

On Thursday we stopped at Nassau in the Bahamas, which was a bit of a let-down — the tour we’d booked was so poor that we left it early, and it was frankly too hot to enjoy anyway. Happily, the ship itself was glorious, so we hurried back to cool off in the air conditioning, and I went along to a panel on writing queer crime fiction.

Friday arrived far too quickly, and they turfed us off the boat at 7.45am. We took a taxi into Miami for a final night in a gorgeous hotel to recover from our hectic week, then caught the 19.45 flight back to London on Saturday night. By that point we’d both picked up a virus and were feeling decidedly rough, so we’ve taken it easy since then.

Still — we had a marvellous time and made lots of lovely new friends. I’d jump at the chance to do it again, though we’ll have to weigh up whether we can face the weather, because August in Florida is hot.

The cats were delighted to see us. Coco was all over me, and Indy has been glued to my side ever since.

Piccies below: Book signing day, 50’s and Fairy Godmother Nights, Sparkly Night, and me with a LOT of cocks in Key West…

    🏆 The Winning Captions

Thank you to everyone who joined in and shared your fantastic captions! Here are the best captions that had me laughing the most. Dea wins yet again with two I couldn’t choose between, but Anne L was a very close runner-up with this fabulous caption: “What do you mean we’re out of catnip???”

Below are Dea’s winning captions. Congratulations to Dea and Anne L!

    🧑🏻‍🤝‍🧑🏻 Featured Author

    Riley Bauer

The center who lights up every room. The captain who won’t let anyone through the door.

Ash has always been easy — easy smile, easy laugh, the kind of guy who remembers your coffee order and makes you feel like the most important person in the room. But easy is a performance, and the man behind it just walked away from a marriage that quietly fell apart and a city that stopped feeling like home. Atlanta is supposed to be the fresh start. New team. New ice. Clean slate. He’s fine. He’s always fine.

Then he meets his co-captain, and “fine” stops being a word that fits.

Avi hasn’t let anyone close in ten years. Fifteen years in the closet. A secret relationship with a teammate that ended on a highlight reel. A trade that felt like being discarded. He knows exactly what happens when you let someone in — they leave, and you have to rebuild yourself from whatever’s left. As captain of a brand-new expansion team made of castoffs and long shots, his job is to build something on the ice. Not to notice that the too-warm center who texts at midnight keeps finding cracks in walls Avi forgot were there.

What starts as co-captain chemistry becomes something neither of them expected — late nights after team dinners, a drunk confession in a dark hotel room, a first kiss that changes everything. Ash is discovering a hunger he didn’t know he had. Avi is terrified of how much he wants to feed it.

But Avi’s been here before. And the closer Ash gets, the more Avi is sure this story ends the same way it always does.

Meanwhile, a stray cat shows up at the Firebirds’ facility and decides — with absolutely zero regard for Avi’s emotional boundaries — that he belongs to her. He carries her in his backwards hoodie. He refuses to call it love. And when she disappears, it breaks him open in ways he never saw coming.

Fresh Ice is a slow-burn MM hockey romance about a man who’s never wanted another man before, a captain who forgot how to let himself be wanted, and the scrappy team of misfits who accidentally become a family along the way.
